The Outcome

A sensitive site at the heart of Fitzwilliam’s main campus, within a Conversation Area and close to listed buildings. It was made more sensitive by the fact that numerous buildings on the campus were listed during determination of the application.

We had a lengthy and detailed pre-app with the Council to explain how the campus had evolved over time, beginning with the original Lasdun buildings in the 1960s, the McCormack New Court and the Chapel additions in the 1980s; Wilson Court in the 1990s; Gatehouse Court and Auditorium in the early 2000s; and the library in the late 2000s. By explaining how the site had developed we were able to demonstrate how the new accommodation block right at the heart of the campus formed a natural part of the evolution of the campus which not only integrated with its surroundings but improved them.
